Mini minivan delivers versatility and value. introductionnot quite a full-fledged minivan and not quite a wagon, the mazda5 is a small, front-wheel-drive van with sliding rear doors and space for six. mazda5 was completely redesigned for 2012, so changes for 2013 are minor. Among them: the 2013 mazda5 gets some new exterior colors, and a usb/ipod connection comes standard on all models. the design of the mazda5 is based on the nagare, or flow in nature, design language. Its hallmark is an upside-down pentagon grille up front and a flowing design up over the front fenders and down the sides. with these styling cues, the mazda 5 has a bolder and sportier look than the slab-sided approach usually reserved for minivan bodies. A second-row bench seat is also available, which appears to be better for dogs or cargo than people. It's a versatile cabin, regardless of configuration. Rated at a modest 157 horsepower and 163 foot-pounds of torque, it's the same engine found on certain mazda3 trim levels. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic. fuel economy ratings for the 2013 mazda5 are 21/28 city/highway with the manual transmission, 22/28 mpg with the automatic. we found the mazda 5 enjoyable to drive, with responsive acceleration performance, sharp handling, and smooth braking. Mazda's sporty suspension means there's very little body roll. Minivans such as the dodge grand caravan, honda odyssey and toyota sienna are larger and more expensive. Compact wagons and hatchbacks come closer in size, but lack the rear sliding doors and tend to be more expensive. Each is powered by a 157-hp 2. 5-liter engine. mazda5 sport is available with a 6-speed manual 19,940) or 5-speed automatic 20,940) transmission. Its hallmark is an upside-down pentagon grille up front and a flowing design up over the front fenders and down the sides. the mazda5 has integrated halogen headlamps at the front corners, creating a line that goes up over the front fenders like other mazdas, and then all the way to the rear of the car through the centerline of the body. the lower body is sculpted with an upswept line starting just behind the front tires and extending up and over the rear wheel wells. The second-row captain's chairs flop forward and slide for access to the 50/50 folding third-row bench seat, and there is hidden storage under each chair, not to mention a standard fold-out tray table and cupholder setup that fits between the two captain's chairs when needed. the instrument panel contains the usual two round gauges with lights and indicators in between the deeply tunneled clusters and is designed together with a second large, horizontal binnacle in the center of the instrument panel to house the time, temperature, fuel economy, sound system and climate control readouts, with the cd slot below, a very pleasingly laid-out sound system control center, and a three-dial hvac control panel at the bottom (automatic climate control front and rear air-conditioning with pollen filtration is standard equipment). The shifter, whether manual or automatic, resides in the bottom center of the instrument panel. the three-spoke steering wheel has a thick rim and a thickly padded hub with convenient switches for the sound system on the left, cruise control system on the right, and telephone on the lower left. The thick steering wheel is pleasant to hold onto, and the mazda 5 is made more comfortable with a combination of a tilt/telescope steering column and adjustable seat height. The engine performed smoothly and quietly. front seats are comfortable and supportive, with cool contrasting stitching on upper models. The second-row captain's chairs slide, recline and fold flat, opening up all kinds of passenger comfort and storage possibilities. The six-speaker sound system sounded very good when the volume was cranked up. suspension is conventional, with macpherson struts in front and a multi-link setup in the rear. The ride is relatively flat through the corners, with quicker-acting shock absorbers and brake and throttle action that make the mazda5 fun and comfortable to drive quickly. the steering uses a combination of electric and hydraulic assist, and it feels connected to the tires and the road. Looks great, drives terrific. introductionthe mazda6 was all-new for 2009, completely redesigned and re-engineered. Its launch was lost in the recession, but it carries into 2010 as one of the most appealing midsize sedans on the market. Mainly, it delivers sparkling performance and is a terrific driving experience among midsize sedans. It's also attractively priced. the mazda6 is roomy inside. The 3. 7-liter v6 makes 272 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque, delivers extraordinary performance and is still epa-rated at a commendable 17/25 mpg, city/highway. The v6 is among the most powerful in its class and is a delight to drive. Prices begin at under $20,000 and can go to over $30,000 for a full loaded v6, but a very nicely equipped mazda6 can be had for around $30,000. They are all sedans; no wagon, no two-door, and no mazdaspeed versions are currently available. the mazda 6 is available with a full range of features and technology, including navigation with voice activation and all the expected sound system capabilities. But what we like most about the mazda 6 is its driving dynamics. the mazda6 competes against an impressive group of midsize sedans, but we think people shopping the toyota camry, honda accord, chevrolet malibu, nissan altima, or hyundai sonata should have the mazda6 on their comparison test-drive lists. Particularly, those who enjoy and appreciate a higher level of the driving experience need to consider the mazda6, because it has a sportiness aspect not matched by the competition. changes for 2010 are minimal. Accessories include auto-dimming mirrors 200), rear spoiler 475), and splash guards 150). The mazda 6s has the 3. 7-liter v6 engine, a six-speed automatic transmission, and chrome dual-exhaust outlets. Despite this, it doesn't look like a big car, especially with nothing adjacent for scale. An upper body crease that would normally go to the front wheel stops just shy of that floating fender, and the rear wheel arches have double creases to mirror the front. the mazda6 five-sided grille has a deep v-shape to it and it's all body-colored. There is no chrome beyond the logo wings, and darker colors show even fewer character lines for the most fluid appearance. Fog lights are set in horizontal openings but the lights themselves are vertically-oriented. at the rear, taillamps wrap well around the sides, and v6-model exhausts are distinctively shaped stand-offs not actually connected to the pipes themselves. The exception is the console trim that slashes across the passenger's dash which, on some models, appears a cross between silver-veined black granite and ash-black burnt wood with wide rings in it. It's a look we've not run across recently. There is generous room inside, so even six-foot-plus bodies can sit in front and then jump in back without moving the front seat, even on cars with the moonroof. The hood slopes out of sight, common in this aerodynamic era. The roof pillars are not so wide that they obstruct vision; the outside mirrors are fairly low and so is the dashboard, all adding up to a good view out. When shifting an automatic manually the gear selected is shown in a large font above the odometers. at top center of the dash is a deep red digital display for climate, radio and clock information, easily read by anyone in the car. Below it are center vents, the audio system or navigation if so equipped, and basic three-ring climate controls.
