All-new, available with v6 and seven-passenger seating. introductionit's not often that toyota finds itself chasing the competition in a class that it invented. Such is the case, however, with the rav4, the original small sport utility built on a car chassis. It's not that there has been anything fundamentally wrong with the vehicle. Other suvs also offer a third row of seats, boosting passenger capacity from five to seven. no longer, in either regard. With the 2006 rav4, toyota has caught up. There's a new, 269-horsepower, 3. 5-liter v6 engine coupled to a new, five-speed automatic. And there's an optional third row of seats that, by the way, folds into the floor, leaving a flat cargo space that holds almost five more cubic feet of stuff than the '05 model. The rav4 has been a standard-setter virtually from its inception. And the exterior is fresh, less flashy, with fewer styling gimmicks. But the same can't be said for the interior, where some of the updating appears not to have been so much an improvement as a change to something different, while still just as good as before. the 2006 rav4 is a mix, then, of best, better and good, but with one reservation: the v6 seems almost too much for the package, as if in catching up, toyota leapt too far ahead. It's a good, solid engine, and it adds substantially to the rav4's capabilities. It has to haul as many as seven people, for instance, and it raises the tow rating to as high as 3500 pounds. But as it's engineered for the 2006 rav4, it just might be more than was needed. All three can be upgraded to the 3. 5-liter, 269-horsepower v6 with a new five-speed automatic 2,035 for the base; $1,915 for sport and limited). Optional are two stereos, one the same upgrade as offered on the base, the other a jbl premium system with nine speakers, including a subwoofer 590); power tilt-and-slide moonroof 900); plus many of the options available for the base model. Befitting the model's designation, the third-row seat is not offered on the sport. the limited model upgrades with dual-zone automatic climate control; an in-dash, six-disc cd changer; power-adjustable driver seat; heated outside mirrors; leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; rear privacy glass; cargo cover; fog lamps; p225/65r17 tires on alloy wheels; and a full, hard-shell spare tire cover. Options include the third-row seat 810) and a rear-seat entertainment system for the v6 1,075). Leather seats are optional 1,050). Front seat heaters 440), audio upgrades, and other features are available. safety features on all 2006 rav4s include dual-stage frontal airbags, latch child safety seat anchors, antilock brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution, electronic stability control and traction control. However, side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags are optional on all three models 650). We strongly recommend getting them. Curtain airbags are designed to provide head protection in a side impact or rollover, the leading cause of fatalities in those types of accidents, while side-impact airbags are designed to improve torso protection. walkaroundno longer a cute ute, neither is the new rav4 anywhere near a brute ute. Still, the overall design is more serious, more substantive than the '06, with fewer curves and less cladding, presenting a more finished look. the all-new 2006 rav4's front end contains all the same elements as the '05, but more tautly composed. The rectangular grille is rounder, the slits below more symmetrical. Headlights are more compact, fog lamps smaller and more focused. The wider track (the distance between the tires side to side), by more than two inches front and rear, gives the '06 rav4 a more solid stance, which is good news for resisting rollover in emergency maneuvers. a boxier shape defines the side view, the better to accommodate that third-row seat; from the front quarter oblique, the fatter, more upright c-pillar and taillight housing remind us of the subaru tribeca, a larger seven-passenger, japanese-brand import, priced a notch or two above the rav4. The seven additional inches of wheelbase (measured between the front and rear wheels) and almost 14 inches of added overall length stretch the cabin and give the windshield a sleeker rake. An understated indent runs along the bottom of the doors, softening the visual impression of bulk. Wheel well arches blend smoothly into the fenders. the back end shows more revision than either the side or front of the '06 rav4. Taillights are slightly smaller and positioned higher on the rear fenders. The spare tire bolts into a recess offset to the right in the swing-gate, but it's a less-aggressive recess and contained fully in the swing-gate. Thus, no longer does the bumper house the bottom third of the tire. The rear license plate preserves the asymmetrical look by bolting into the lower left of the swing-gate, beneath a toyota logo and rav4 badge. interiorinside the 2006 rav4, what change there is has been effected mostly for the sake of change. Ergonomically, there's little to distinguish the new from the old. Most noteworthy are some, shall we say, interesting styling cues. the front seats are supportive but not overly firm, with modest bolsters and decent thigh support. The tilt-and-telescope steering wheel combined with the multi-plane adjustable driver's seat enables almost any percentile driver to find a comfortable fit, and without the added complexity (and cost) of adjustable pedals. The relatively high seating position, low cowl and sloping hood make for good visibility to the front. The lengthy side windows ease lane checking. Fully retracting head restraints in the second row and optional third row of seats deliver the full backlight to the inside rearview mirror. the second-row seats are less padded than the front seats, sans bolsters, but no surprise, really, seeing as how the seat has to fit three people in a pinch. the optional third row seats barely qualify as such, with flat bottoms and equally featureless backs and head restraints that do, however, and to their credit, compel proper height adjustments to spare occupants' upper backs. Access to that back row, by folding and tilting forward the outboard second row units, while not especially easy, isn't as much a strain or as awkward as in some larger, full-bodied sport utilities. the new rav4's longer wheelbase delivered more than space for a third row of seats. It also allowed almost six inches to be added to second-row legroom over the '05. Headroom in the second row also grew by more than an inch, although front-row occupants lost half an inch. Its major competitor, the 2006 honda cr-v, betters the rav4 in second-row headroom and hiproom, by about a half-inch and an inch, respectively, and in front row hiproom by a pinch more than one inch; elsewhere, differences are less than a half-inch. The 2006 suzuki xl-7 provides the sole seven-passenger competitor in the class and betters the rav4 in third-row headroom and legroom by about an inch and a half; it trails in every other measure by an inch or two. Same for cargo space, where the toyota beats the honda by a cubic foot but comes in almost two cubic feet behind the suzuki. most everything in the instrument cluster and on the dash of the new rav4 is where it was in the 2005 models. The speedometer is now centered in the cluster, swapping places with the tachometer, which is now off to the left, and the fuel and coolant gauges are conjoined on the right, instead of splitting their own circle. But the placement, and most important, the usability of the controls populating the center stack is virtually the same as the '05, which means very good, and the. The volkswagen jetta competes with compact cars such as the ford focus, chevrolet cruze and honda civic. the jetta sedan was redesigned for 2011 using less sophisticated technologies and lower-cost interior materials, with a lower price, a package with a great deal of value because the jetta solidity and quality was still there. For 2012, the sporty turbocharged jetta gli reclaimed some of the lost content. the jetta tdi sportwagen, with its turbo-diesel direct-injection engine (and especially its dsg twin-clutch automanual transmission), has gotten rave reviews for its performance and fuel mileage, 40-plus miles per gallon. That engine is an old but solid design. jetta se brings a 2. 5-liter five-cylinder engine that makes more power, 170 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque, while getting almost the same fuel mileage. The five-cylinder, 20-valve 2. 5-liter engine is a volkswagen stalwart, with good power. It's capable of propelling the jetta se from zero to 60 mph in 8. 5 seconds with the 6-speed automatic, and powers jetta to a top speed of 127 mph. It's epa-rated at a combined 26 mpg, about what we got over nearly 500 miles of driving in a jetta sel automatic and sel manual. We prefer the very good automatic. most models offer a choice of 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. We found the sport mode for the 6-speed automatic sharp and effective. We used it in city driving, where it responded crisply on san francisco's hills, and in slow-and-go freeway traffic, where it kept the transmission in third gear rather than upshifting and downshifting all the time. Manual mode can be used for spirited driving, shifting at the lever. It's programmed well, responsive and obedient. jetta hybrid boasts an epa-estimated 42/48 mpg city/highway, 45 mpg combined. We drove a jetta hybrid for one week, covering 340 miles, half city and half freeway, and we only got 35 mpg. Jetta hybrid demands premium gasoline, while the 2. 5-liter five-cylinder on jetta se and sel demands only less-expensive regular. the jetta tdi sedan and sportwagen use the latest turbo-diesel direct-injection technology in their engine, making 140 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, while getting an epa-rated 30/42 mpg city/highway. to keep the price down, volkswagen uses an old-school rear torsion beam suspension in jetta s and se models; the ride is firm, but most owners won't miss a multi-link suspension. The build quality is impressive. The jetta is quiet at speed and feels solid. Rear disc brakes have been added to these models for 2013, after gripes that the drum brakes on 2011 and 2012 models were archaic. jetta shoppers might notice that the interior materials on the base s model aren't of the highest quality; it's not that the materials are cheap, just less rich than they were a few years ago. There are hard plastics that can creak and rattle over the years. But the trim is tasteful, and the standard cloth seats fit well, while the optional v-tex leatherette upholstery passes easily for real leather. The trim in the se has been upgraded for 2013. jetta sedan's interior is clean, stylish and comfortable, while being smart, accommodating and functional. There's good headroom front and rear. Rear-seat legroom is first in class at 38. 1 inches, nearly as much as a bmw 7 series. Vw makes smart use of cupholders and little storage cubbies. The instruments are handsome, with clean white-on-black numbering. jetta gli brings back all the interior quality. The dashboard is made of a soft-touch material, and there is accent stitching on the shifter, seats and steering wheel. The gli features a 200-horsepower 2. 0-liter turbo engine, accelerating from zero to 60 in 6. 8 seconds using the magical dsg twin-clutch automated manual transmission. It feels like it's on rails going around corners. High-quality construction is evident inside and out. Quattro all-wheel drive and the latest in active safety features helps keep the driver on the road no matter the conditions or situation. the 2006 a4 comes in a range of models. Enthusiasts who just can't get enough power and want race track handling may prefer the s4, which features a powerful v8 engine and high-performance underpinnings. the a4 has state of the art powertrains, with intercooled turbochargers, multi-stage intake manifolds, variable valve timing and the latest technological advance: direct injection, the cleanest and most efficient means yet devised of blending fuel and air in an engine's cylinders. The s4 comes with a v8 making 340 horsepower and 302 pound-feet of torque and, according to audi, is capable of 0-60 mph runs in the low five seconds through its standard quattro drivetrain. All three models come with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed tiptron. walkaroundthe audi a4 is essentially all-new for 2006, though officially it was launched as a 2005. 5 model. On one point, there's agreement: it's different. Whether this is a plus is subjective, but expect the look to appear in clearly recognizable and evolving form on all audis as each model comes up for a redesign. We've already seen this on the new a6 and a8. Laterally split intakes below the body-colored bumper and outboard of the grille do dual duty, housing fog lamps and channeling air toward the front disc brakes. A modest hood bulge, a styling cue designers call a power bulge by way of hinting at the latent energy lurking beneath, carries the grille's vertical outlines back to the roof's a-pillars. the side view shows a sharply creased shoulder line running the length of the car, from the trailing corner of the headlamp housings to the leading edge of the tail lamp lenses. Side window glass atop a relatively high beltline is nicely proportioned with the body mass. A bump strip breaks up the expanse of the lower door panels. The front and rear lower-quarter panels dip slightly fore and aft of the round wheel housings, pulling the body closer to the ground. good-sized tail lamps tie together the three elements of the new a4's rear fascia, positioned for the most part in the panels framing the trunk lid and license plate surround, but overlapping those two pieces to break up what might otherwise be an overwhelming expanse of metal. It's a nice, high-quality cabin, as we've come to expect from audi. Colors and finishes are muted. A choice of wood trim is available that nicely complements the interior. We found them comfortable and supportive. The standard cloth upholstery feels durable and provides a bit of grip. The seats, mirrors, steering column and other features adjust in every conceivable direction, helping drivers find a comfortable seating position. interior space in the new a4 matches that of the previous-generation model. It's generally adequate in front but somewhat limited in rear leg room. This is not a car for the full-figured or for people much taller than six feet. all controls are focused on the driver and with few exceptions are ergonomicall. It drives like a european sedan and its edgy styling stands out in a sea of boxy sport-utilities and minivans. Yet the srx is quite practical. It can carry up to seven passengers, and its flat, carpeted cargo area works great for hauling cargo. its sharp handling, quick acceleration and high-performance braking make for a sporty, enjoyable experience with a smooth, extremely quiet ride. the srx comes trimmed with leather upholstery and is loaded with luxury features. The interior is stylish and comfortable. Its flat cargo floor makes the srx a good dog car. srx is available with a v6 or v8 engine. The v8s are smooth and confident and deliver brilliant acceleration for a vehicle of this size. All-wheel drive is available and we've found that the srx performs superbly in the snow. overall improvements to the srx for 2007 include an all-new cockpit with new design, materials and hand-crafted assembly process. Cadillac also has mated the northstar v8-equipped models to a new fully electronic six-speed automatic transmission for 2007. The base audio system for the srx has now been upgraded to bose for 2007. new options for 2007 include a sport package with 20-inch wheels, all-wheel drive and limited slip differential; a bose 5. 1 digital surround sound option; a theater option package with bose 5. 1 digital surround sound, navigation and rear-seat entertainment; an automatic odor filtration option; and passenger side inflatable restraint (psir) suppression, which detects the occupant's size and, in turn, enables or disables the air bag automatically. lineupthe cadillac srx comes in two models differentiated by their engines, a 255-hp v6 or a 320-hp v8. Station wagon fans think wagons are more sophisticated than sport utilities, possibly because they are. The srx straddles the middle. It has the function and driving performance of a wagon, but a look (and higher seating position) that's suggestive an suv. Its ride, handling and technology are more sophisticated than most truck-based suvs. the srx features cadillac's edgy art and science design philosophy, introduced on the cts sedan. People tend to love it or hate it. The srx looks modern, even futuristic, but doesn't neglect cadillac's heritage. It was inspired by the original el dorado, with its exuberant tailfins, that debuted in 1959. Love it or hate it, it's bold and unabashedly american. At 41 inches, it has more rear legroom than other midsize luxury sport-utilities and as much rear hip room as the roomy acura mdx. five-passenger seating is standard, with individual seats in front and a three-place bench in back. The second seat powers back and forth for more legroom or more cargo space. More suvs should have this feature. The cargo area in the five-passenger model can be outfitted with covered storage spaces built into the floor. seven-passenger seating is achieved by ordering the optional third-row bench seat. This third row gives srx an edge on many of its competitors, including the infiniti fx and lexus rx. Yet the srx's third seat provides less room, including legroom, than those in the acura mdx and volvo xc90. The cadillac's third-row seat folds flat into the floor with the press of a button. Adding greatly to convenience, buttons to accomplish this are provided near the rear hatch and on the pillar just behind the second row of seats. The third row comes with storage bins and cup holders. Each row of seats sits higher than the one in front of it, theater style, so everyone can see out. luggage space is about average for the class but it lays out better than most with a nice, flat cargo floor. The cargo floor behind the second row , is dog-friendly, which makes the srx an excellent vehicle for the fur-bearing members of the family. Roof rails come standard to expand cargo-carrying capability. storage cubbies abound, including covered front door compartments, front door map pockets, front seatback pockets, a front center console with two compartments, a bin behind the front console and a glove box with a shelf. New for 2007 is the addition of a storage compartment on the passenger side of the instrument panel. There are cup holders in the front seat center console and second seat fold-down armrest. The srx also has rear coat hooks that are accessible from both the rear passenger doors and liftgate, whichever proves more convenient when picking up the dry cleaning. srx's interior electronics and entertainment are enhanced for 2007, including a standard bose audio system on all srx models. In addition, the renowned bose 5. 1 digital surround system is available as an option.
